Tax Time 2025: What the ATO Wants You to Get Right

Tax Time Essentials: What the ATO Wants You to Get Right in 2025

As we head into another round of tax season, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has outlined key areas it will be focusing on — and it’s a timely reminder to check your claims and records carefully.

Whether you work from home, have multiple income streams, or just want to make sure your return is accurate, this guide is here to help you navigate your personal tax return and stay on track this tax time.

The ATO’s Focus Areas for 2025

Each year, the ATO puts extra scrutiny on certain types of claims. For the 2024–25 financial year, it is focusing on:

  • Work-related expenses
  • Working from home deductions
  • Multiple sources of income, including side hustles or freelance work

Why these areas? Because they’re where the ATO sees the most mistakes — often due to misunderstandings or lack of documentation.

1. Work-Related Expenses: Keep It Relevant

To claim a deduction for work-related expenses, you must meet three key rules:

  1. The expense must be directly related to your job.
  2. You must have spent the money yourself and not been reimbursed.
  3. You need to have records to prove it.

While many claims are genuine, the ATO has flagged some surprising examples:

  • A mechanic claimed an air fryer, vacuum cleaners, a TV and gaming console.
  • A truck driver claimed swimwear for rest-stop swims.
  • A fashion manager claimed $10,000+ in designer clothes for work functions.

All were denied as personal expenses, not essential for earning income.

2. Working from Home: Know Which Method to Use

With more people working remotely, working from home (WFH) deductions are common — but the ATO has tightened the rules.

You can choose between two methods:

a. Fixed Rate Method – 70 cents per hour

  • Covers electricity, internet, phone and stationery
  • You must record all your hours worked from home (no estimates)
  • You can’t claim these items separately if using this method

Acceptable records include: A diary, spreadsheet, roster or timesheet — showing start and finish times for each session.

b. Actual Cost Method

  • Claim the actual expenses you’ve incurred for working from home
  • Requires receipts and bills
  • You must calculate the work-related use of each item (e.g. percentage of internet use)

Note: Rent and mortgage expenses are generally not deductible unless your home is a dedicated place of business, which may trigger capital gains tax when you sell.

3. Side Hustles and Extra Income: Must Be Declared

If you’ve earned income outside of your main job, it must be included in your tax return. This includes:

  • Freelance or contract work
  • Gig economy platforms (e.g., ride-sharing, delivery apps)
  • Online sales or services
  • Part-time or casual jobs

Each type of income may come with different deductions, but all income must be reported. Missing these can result in penalties or delays.

Tip: Keep track of both your income and related expenses, and let us know if you’re unsure how to report it correctly.

Good Record-Keeping Is Essential

The ATO expects that you can prove every claim you make. If you don’t have records, your deduction may be denied.
