Building Better Work Environments

Building Better Work Environments

In today’s rapidly changing world, crafting better work environments is no longer a luxury, but a strategic requirement. Fueling productivity, nurturing loyalty, and uplifting well-being, a vibrant work environment is a transformative space where employees thrive, not merely survive.

Read on to discover how to make this vision a reality.

1. Remote Working

Remote working allows you to focus on work and life as opposed to commuting.” – Ken Matos

In a post Covid landscape, the option to work remotely has transcended into an expectation in the workforce.

Did you know?

In 2022, Buffer surveyed 3,000 people from all around the world. It found:

  • 98% would like to work remotely, at least some of the time, for the rest of their careers.
  • 98% recommend remote working.
  • 71% of companies plan to permanently allow some form of remote work.

The National Bureau of Economic Research in the US found 35% of Australians said they would quit their job or start looking for another if their employer forced them to return to the office full time.

2. Music at Workplace

“Music can heal the wounds, that medicine cannot touch” – Debasish Mridha

Some studies have shown that music can reduce anxiety more effectively than anti-anxiety drugs.

Some benefits of music:

  • Reduces Anxiety
  • Lowers Blood Pressure
  • Improve Your Mood
  • Increase Alertness
  • Improves Memory

“Music seems to fulfill a range of important functions for employees, including providing relief from stress, and improving concentration,” says Dr. Anneli Haake from University of Sheffield.

Here are some ways to creating an office filled with music and camaraderie:

1. Create a music corner: Set up a designated area in the office (i.e. in the break room), where employees can play musical instruments like a guitar, piano, or even a small drum set during their breaks.

2. Music for Celebrations: Play uplifting and energetic music during company celebrations, milestones, or achievements. This creates a festive atmosphere and boosts employee morale.

3. Live Music Workshops: Arrange workshops or sessions where employees can learn to play musical instruments or participate in group singing, fostering creativity and bonding.

3. Sharing Culture & Sharing Food

“Food sharing is a fundamental form of cooperation that is particularly noteworthy because of its central role in shaping human life history, social organisation, and cooperative psychology” – Jaeggi & Gurven, 2013

In business and in life,  strength lies in differences, not in similarities.

Benefits of Diversity

Innovation

Higher Innovation

Diverse companies are 7.8 times more likely to be innovation leaders in their market.

Higher Cash Flow

Diverse companies enjoy 2.3 times higher cash flow per employee.

Better Decision Making

Diverse teams outperform individual decision-makers up to 87% of the time.

An easy (and fun!) way to share and appreciate cultural differences in the workplace is through food:

  • Share snacks: It doesn’t always have to be big meals, something as simple as a Kopiko candy could be a good first step to opening up exciting conversations and promoting understanding.
  • Create space to eat lunch together: Create an environment that encourages team members to eat lunch together. These informal gatherings can foster camaraderie and ignite discussions on topics that may not surface in formal settings.
  • Do team potlucks: Actively encourage the team to bring in food from their different cultures. Such experiences help in breaking down cultural barriers and fostering a sense of unity within diversity.

Rather than stamping out differences, embrace the diversity of your team.

4. Mentoring Interns

To teach is to learn twice” – Joseph Joubert

An impressive 79% of Millennials consider mentoring crucial for their career success. When analyzing the keys to remarkable success in companies, one trait stands out among the rest: the presence of excellent leaders who, in turn, cultivate excellent employees.

This prompts the question: What drives the adoption of mentoring programs in successful businesses, and what benefits do mentoring programs offer?

While the “one-way” benefits for the mentees in mentoring programs are evident, it is essential to recognize that mentoring also brings significant advantages to both the mentors and the organization itself.

Benefits to the Mentor
Benefits to the Organisation
Self-Confidence
Employee Engagement
Communication Skills
Employee Satisfaction
Job Satisfaction
Employee Loyalty
Company Loyalty
Culture of Learning
On-Boarding Ease

5. Volunteering

Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

Giving back or volunteering is becoming a top retention strategy for corporations. A 2022 study on talent retention found that “companies see a 52% lower turnover among newer employees when they participate in purpose programs.”

Here are some benefits volunteering brings to the employees in the workplace:

  • Improve self-awareness
  • Refine existing skills and
  • Develop new skills
  • Improved mental & physical health
  • Building social connections
  • Pride in work

Start big or start small, each step counts so why not start now?

1. Environmental Initiatives: Initiate eco-friendly volunteering activities, such as tree planting, beach cleanups, or recycling drives, to promote environmental consciousness within the company.

2. Mentoring for Non-profits: Encourage employees to volunteer as mentors for individuals in underserved communities or nonprofit organizations. This fosters personal growth while supporting community development.

3. Collaborative Volunteering Events: Collaborate with other companies in the region for joint volunteering events. This enhances community impact and strengthens industry partnerships.
